The Road remembers
There is something about a road that has always called to me.
Not necessarily where it leads. Not the destination waiting at the end. It is the road itself—the miles between here and there, the changing landscape outside the window, the faded signs, forgotten buildings, empty gas stations, distant mountains and the places that seem to exist only because someone once decided to draw a line across the map.
Highway 35 also known as Skyline Blvd winds through a redwood forest in California.
I have spent a good portion of my life following those lines.
Sometimes with a destination in mind. Sometimes with nothing more than a camera, a full tank of gas, and the feeling that something was waiting just beyond the next bend.
Some of my favorite photographs have come from simply being out there—watching headlights and taillights carve their way through the darkness, following ribbons of asphalt through mountains and deserts, or standing still while the world rushes past.
A road is more than a way to get somewhere.
It is movement. It is freedom. It is escape. It is memory.
Every set of lights represents someone going somewhere. Perhaps toward something. Perhaps away from something. We rarely know their destination, but for a brief moment, our paths cross.
That's what I love about photographing the road.
You don't have to know where you're going to find something worth seeing.
Sometimes, you just have to keep driving.
Never stop exploring.
This journey has been anything but ordinary. What started in California ended in Colorado. The adventure was documented.
